Incessant power failure is one factor inhibiting economic development in most cities of Nigeria, Kano is one of the cities that face this problem, despite this however, owed to Kano commercial centredness, the people insist in development activities to boost the economy, this is through establishment of small scale industries/businesses like barbing saloon, dyeing centres, restaurants, woodwork, meat roasting, to mention just a few. All these activities need electricity, mainly from hydro, hence people turn to fossil-fuel generator, this is not without its own typical problems; environmental pollution, both noise and air, which affect people’s health. This survey was conducted along one major highway called Katsina road, in one of the CBD in Kano city known as Gada, with the aim of examining the extent of the use of fossil-fuel generator, the number of users within the study area and the health effect on the dwellers and the environ. 100 questionnaires were spread among 100 subjects selected in a random but purposive sampling, only 84 questionnaires were returned. The survey result signifies that there is significant reliance on fossil fuel electric generator to promote businesses, strong relationship between fossil-fuel generator and ill-health e.g. lung and breathing diseases as well as hearing impairment within the population. Though most of them were aware of the fact that there is a relationship between the usage of electric generator and health problem but they persisted on using it. The result of the findings was discussed at length and interpreted from various angle. A suggestion was made for a steady electricity supply which should be secured and sustained in the study area and beyond, through investing in cheap and safer source of energy like solar energy and other renewable energies. Moreover to save thousands of lives, the business owners are recommended to be relocated to a safer distance from the highway.
