It is quite common to come across with additional stories being applied to historical buildings in today’s cities. These applications of which concept are stimulated by Europe have been also seen in Istanbul since 1980s. They have often been argued from the first years they were built to our days. When the applications are observed, they have been criticized in context of their design approaches, effects to speculative change of historical city, unprotecting of historic building authenticity. Besides, those who support the applications argue that applications have been preferred for historical building owners in order to minimize their lost rights originated from master plans. When the applications are observed, it is seen that this is primarily a mistake of planning strategies. These applications will be more acceptable than today’s thanks to early documentation and designation of historical buildings and sensitive urban planning of historical cities. In this study, it is concluded that the applications cause damage of historical buildings identity, interrupt the cultural continuity, cause speculative changes in cites. And also, they are not sustainable applications due to increasing of usage in cities.
