‘Wayang Kulit’, a traditional theater art-form using puppets and shadow-play has been designated as a Masterpiece of Oral and Intangible Heritage of Humanity by UNESCO. As compared to its neighboring countries, the importance of ‘Wayang Kulit’ in Malaysia is slowly dying out. Local communities especially the younger generations have little respect for this tradition, which caused by the expansion of multimedia technology today. This paper identified and documented the characteristics of ‘Wayang Kulit’ with better interpretation of its story line, the puppets, musical instruments as well as the language used and practiced among the Malaysian. It concludes by discussing ways to preserve the oldest performing art heritage on the future generations.
