The existence of legislation that protects women’s rights to participate in development serves the increase of women’s participation, particularly in the presence of negative social norms that frustrate women’s access to senior administrative positions. A key source of legislation adopted in the Sultanate for the protection of women’s rights and hence women’s involvement in administrative development is the ratification of the UN Convention on the Elimination of all Forms of Discrimination against Women (CEDAW), signed by the Sultanate being a member state to the United Nations. The aim of this study is to examine the development of the Omani legislations as such a development is one of the National Strategic Objectives for the Development of Women in Oman. Such an examination checks the application of CEDAW by analyzing laws relevant to women including, among other laws, civil status and nationality laws. The provisions of the said laws are compared and contrasted with CEDAW’s. Interviews are also conducted with specialists including, for example, lawyers and staff working for the National Commission for Human Rights (NCHR).
