According to experts retirees need 70-80 percent of their preretirement income to maintain their standards of living in retirement. In Nigeria, contributory pension replaces less than that – about 29 percent for an average earner at retirement. Hitherto, most Nigerian women civil servant retirees rely on additional means for most of their income. Therefore, in order to better understand the role pension supplements play in the maintenance of retirees’ standard of living, this paper discusses briefly whether and how well their pension income helps them to do this and what they spend their pension income on. Then the paper discusses in details not only the pension supplements these retirees employ, but also how the choice of supplements differs in terms of education status. Primary data for this study is sourced from questionnaires and semi structured interviews. Secondary data is obtained from government documentations and publications. Preliminary findings reveal that retirees rely heavily on pension supplements because of the inadequacy of their pension income to maintain their standard of living and meeting their consumption expenditures. This paper therefore suggests a building up of the basic services since most of the pensioners’ income is spent on healthcare, housing, children’s education and transportation.
