William Faulkner’s conception of time, which is the cornerstone of the writer’s world view, is reflected in two metaphors of special importance in Faulkner’s prose. The first metaphor “And Grief and Time are tideless golden seas” appears in the first novel of the writer. Another metaphor is Yoknapatawpha, which denotes the southern world created by Faulkner. In the paper the connection between the peculiarities of the writer’s narrative poetics and the metaphors and their functions are described. As a result of the analysis of Faulkner’s works, it is revealed that the metaphors of Grief and Time and of Yoknapatawpha are linked with the peculiarities of William Faulkner’s narrative poetics and his conception of time. The results of the research described in the paper constitute part of greater research on the poetics of William Faulkner’s novels and can be of interest for the researchers working on Faulkner’s works as well as readers whose interest in the writer is general.
