In today’s world, defining a city's identity is one of the most important parts of a city's social life. Cities must have their own characters and uniqueness in order to transfer it to their residents. Therefore, as public city spaces, which affect the urban quality and reflect the culture and behavior of the society, are major functional and visual factors, and show the welfare of the residents, it is better to start evaluating the city and its citizens by analyzing these factors. Meanwhile, in the urban level, a city texture and landscape, which illustrates the streets, squares and also buildings as its main components must especially be regarded from a historical point of view in order to achieve a more identifiable city. In recent years, along with the quick urban development, the cities’ shapes have exactly changed. They do not follow their traditional patterns any more. Thus, lots of problems in urban furniture and also city identity have risen. There are no united and organized patterns for designing urban furniture, especially in Famagusta, Cyprus, as a historical coastal city, which is selected as a case study. These problems always confuse people and also cause visual pollution. So, this research wants to discuss urban VIS design (visual identity/image system) in public spaces in order to solve the problem. Therefore, the study tries to define the visual identity system and develops it in the case study by particular attention to history, nature and culture of the city and citizens to gain a unique urban identity.
