Contemporary Turkish Painting has gone through transformations and transitions within cultural interactions. Within this process of transformation, the concept of abstract art in Turkey has been handled by artists who left the Novelty Group. Within the frame of the rules followed by the abstract understanding of the western civilization, these artists formed a unique logic of designing influenced by folkloric and calligraphic components that reflect their national and local identities. After 1950s, the economic, political, social and cultural transformations in Turkey became influential on art. The abstract tendencies during this process represent a period during which important developments took place. Relations with the west became intensified, which contributed a lot to the formation and development of abstract art. However, the abstract understanding in Turkish painting is different from solely abstract understanding. Some works of Turkish abstract art are formed of abstract local and folkloric motifs. These abstract novelties were made within a geometric–non–figurative frame. The artists of this period who believe in the necessity to turn back to local and national sources supported a view of art synthesized by the western understanding and social structure. This study elaborates on the existence and importance of Contemporary Turkish Painting, close to but also different from abstract art in some respects, in the field of abstract art. This matter will be clarified by related examples.
