A geopark is an area with outstanding geological heritage required to be protected due to its significant-scientific value, quality and to be valued for educational, scientific and tourism purposes. Geoparks not only preserve the natural heritage but also benefit local people and businesses through tourism and education initiatives and provide advantages in terms of regional development. There exist many areas carrying geopark characteristics in Turkey. It is worth nothing that there are cultural trails in geoparks where tourists observe the cultural panorama and are educated about the relation between geological heritage and cultural heritage. Turkey possesses a substantial natural heritage with perfect combination of its culture and nature. In Turkey, there are national parks, natural monuments, natural parks and natural preservation areas but these places have not yet been officially called as “Geopark”. The purpose of the study is to demonstrate richness of Turkey with respect to geoparks and introduce the places where geological and natural heritage are conserved and enhanced with their archaeological, ecological and cultural values.
