The means of social media are getting used more and more by political parties and politicians. The power of social media has been realized by politicians and integrated into the communication strategies during election periods in Turkey as well as in the world. Overall, social media, in particular, has been a distinctive feature of contemporary election campaign strategies. Social media are particularly preferred because of fast and easy access to the electorate, one-to-one and intimate communication opportunity, providing correct information spontaneously and preventing rumors. Politicians intensively use the means of social media to strengthen the ties with their electorate, give idea about their stance towards politics and ensure participation. The means of social media constitute one of the strongholds of campaigns during election periods. Particularly Twitter, as one of the means of social media, is preferred in election propaganda due to providing instant messaging and effective communication. It is a well-known fact that during the presidential elections in the USA in 2008 and 2012, Obama used Twitter very effectively and it is even claimed that it played an important role in his election. The social media accounts of politicians are closely followed due to their being significant news sources for journalists as well as the interest of their supporters and opponents. Generally speaking, the practices of Turkish politicians pertaining to the use of Twitter cannot go beyond the watchword of “it is necessary to be in social media.” Twitter messages of the candidates from the governing party as well as tree opposition parties, who are running for major in three metropolises, namely Istanbul for 2014 local elections are studied with respect to interaction, information and agenda through content analysis method.
