ABSTRACT
William Shakespeare’s Julius Caesar is one of the plays alluded to in Finnegans Wake. The overthrow
of the king-like figure and the opposition that arises between his ‘sons’ afterwards, which is described
in Shakespeare’s play, is the main theme in Finnegans Wake as well. What makes the analyses of
Wakean allusions difficult is that Joyce uses Caesarian allusions jointly with others, thus creating a
complex text containing multiple sources. Besides, Joyce often transforms and deforms the quotes from
the play so as to fit in the context and serve to his purposes.
