The upsurge of a liberal and fair media world has created the atmosphere for Nigerians to have the liberty of sharing undiluted news on social media. On this note, this gave the edge to international broadcasters using the essence of citizen journalism to meet the global spectators. This paper tends to investigate the role of citizen Journalism in contemporary Nigerian society despite the various atrocities that are being committed against them. It focuses on two topical cases in the span of a year (2015). A case study of the fuel scarcity and the proposed social media bill of 2015. The conventional media has ignored or rather under-reported some political and social basic news in the protection of their interest. However, with the intervention of Citizen Journalism, such news are aired via social networking sites and websites. The undertone of this is what we call ``essence of citizen journalists'' in the paper. The study is based on Elizabeth Noelle-Neumann's theory of Spiral of Silence (Fear of reprisal). It further expatiates on these two cases and how Nigerian Citizen Journalists have helped to shape the Nigerian News agenda and public opinion despite various threats from the government. The paper incorporated the political economy of broadcast and print media in the case of Nigeria thereby highlighting the role of the broadcast and print media in the liberal democratic state, which this study assumes Nigeria as. The media as a liberal democratic state should be the ``watchdog'' of the society. But are they in the case of Nigeria? This open-ended question and others were answered in this paper. A citizen journalist in the Nigerian social and political scenario plays a vital role that is ultimately important and worthy of credits. Based on the aforementioned, this paper presents the vibrant and willing role of Citizen Journalist in a society like Nigeria. The role of media ownership in the Nigerian systematic operation of public opinion will also be examined. The study concludes that the humanitarian human rights should not be breached and citizen journalists should not be made the subject of attack by those in power for their misconduct.
