From a semiotic perspective the word “turn” in Henry James’s The Turn of the Screw is of great significance; it is repeated several times in the narratve. In this paper, it is argued that James’s narrative is open to a proliferation or semiosis of turns, and therefore, it is important to know who turns the screw. The issue is addressed from a narratorial perspective by drawing upon the semiotic analysis offered by Gerard Genette in his discussion of the concept of voice, in particular, ‘narrative level’ and ‘person’.
