Changes in society, as well as advances in education, mandate a review of current college classroom pedagogy. In this paper student created, content videos (SCCV) are investigated. Although this topic has been investigated in terms of student satisfaction (Greene and Crespi 2012), the contribution of this paper is to inverstigate the potential benefit regarding actual learning of course content. After learning objectives are established, small students groups were given both classroom and after class assignments to master the learning objectives of the course through video production.
Three small quasi experiments were conducted and results are combined into 1 large experiment to test the effectiveness of learning when students were assigned video projects to explain course content (learning objectives). All students in the class were tested on their understanding of the topics. Results from this research demonstrate that learning is enhanced when students create content videos to explain course learning objectives. Additionally, results of a post survey indicate that students enjoy the assignments; finding them relevant and a welcome change to their typical classroom assignments.
