A vast body of literature focuses on the phenomenon of maternal gatekeeping; few studies have examined the influence of maternal gatekeeping on mother-adolescent relationship. The purpose of this study was to examine the effects of maternal gatekeeping, behavioral control and psychological control on mother-adolescent relationship in Taiwan, as well as the possible mediation effect of psychological control in those processes. Participants were 160 mothers (M age=42.98, SD=4.32) and their adolescents (M age=14.01, SD=0.84) who completed self-report questionnaires assessing socio-demographic characteristics, maternal gatekeeping, behavioral control, psychological control and adolescents reports of mother-adolescent relationship. Consistent with our hypotheses, significant positive associations were found between achievement-oriented psychological control (APC), behavioral control and mother-adolescent relationship. We also found that psychological control mediated the relationship between behavioral control and mother-adolescent relationship. However, our findings reveal that maternal gatekeeping was not associated mother-adolescent relationship. Thus, though prior research emphasized the negative effects of inhibitory maternal gatekeeping on mother-adolescent relationship. This result was discussed in the context of family systems theory. Some limitations of this study may be addressed in further researches.
