ABSTRACT

The main purpose of this study is to adapt and analyze the validity and reliability of Intragroup Conflict Scale (ICS) as well as examine and develop the psychometric properties of ICS construct which integrates of 2 dimensions — task conflict and relationship conflict that can be used in Malaysian organizational context. A questionnaire survey was administered to 101 executives working directly under Human Resource Managers (HRM) in the state-owned organization known as Government Link Companies (GLCs) for pilot study. A factor analysis was initially conducted on ten items of ICS to explore the structure underlying the set of questions designed. The results of the exploratory factor analysis (EFA) showed and confirmed a two-factor structure: Task conflict (TC) with five-item and Relationship conflict (RC) with five-item respectively. Later, a questionnaire survey was administered to another 388 executives working directly under HRM in GLCs for actual study. Then a confirmatory factor analysis (CFA) was initially conducted on the ten items of ICS to access the quality of the factor structure by statistically testing the significance of the overall model and to access the goodness-of-fit of the new measure constructs. The CFA results also confirmed that the measurement scale used in this study satisfactorily met the standards of validity and reliability analysis and showed acceptable internal consistency reliability for the overall and the two specific dimensions of intragroup conflict (IC) factor. The IC construct provides a multi-dimensional assessment tool to diagnose and guide intragroup conflict in the Malaysian organizational context.
