Matt 5:13–16 is significant in the understanding of the Sermon on the Mount. It forms a transition identifying those who are to live according to the demands of the Sermon on the Mount in the present (5:17–7:27) and those who will live the life of blessedness in the future (5:3–12). In this transitional passage the audience (the disciples) is metaphorically identified as “The salt of the earth” and “the light of the world.” Using these metaphors to describe the audience, Jesus draws attention to their usage in normal circumstances. Uses of salt for instance include flavouring foods, preservation; while uses of light include leading out of darkness, showing the way, in fact, its absence brings about chaos and anarchy (Gen 1:1–4). Insipidity signifies the absence of salt whereas darkness signifies the absence of light. Equally, the metaphorical understanding of these elements both in biblical and social parlance is instructive. For instance, salt is a sign of covenant while light is a sign of orderliness and progress. So when Jesus refers to his disciples as “the salt of the earth” and “the light of the world,” he means that they are to be to humanity what salt and light are. The statement of the problem is that there is corruption in the world despite the population of Christians in the world. This article therefore sets out to answer why it is so. The aim of this article is to show that the majority of Christians are not really true to their vocation. This article argues that if the majority of Christians were to understand the meaning of the metaphor of salt and light and live accordingly then corruption would have disappeared from the entire universe. Unless these occur, there will be no end to vices like embezzlement of public funds, inflation of contract charges, kidnappings, tribalism, nepotism, and election rigging. The outcome of this article will be of great benefit to all Christians in different fields of endeavours to assess their “Saltness” and “Lightness”. The work will also be useful for Christian leaders who are daily challenged to adequately proclaim the reality of being “Salt” and “Light” in an environment with negative tendencies.
