The foreign influences exerted on the Romanian language along the centuries as a result of both the direct contact with various populations and the scholar interferences were visible especially in the lexis, but they did not change the fundamentally Roman characteristics of the Romanian language. Some of the these borrowings and lexical innovations have been preserved up to the present, whereas some others were active in our language only for a short period of time. The Roman Westernization is a process by means of which the Roman origins of the Romanian language were strengthened via the influence of formal Latin and of other Romanic languages such as Italian and French. The present paper aims at analysing the most representative stages of the Italian influence on the Romanian language, at briefly presenting the corresponding historical context and the stages in which it was exerted, as well as on analyzing recent borrowings from Italian.
