The dispute concerning the maritime delimitation of continental shelf and Exclusive Economic Zone (EEZ) between Romania and Union of Socialist Soviet Republics (USSR) before 1991, and between Romania and Ukraine after 1991 resolved by the International Court of Justice (ICJ) on 3 February 2009 according to the filed application of Romania seeking jurisdiction from the court. ICJ not only concluded that Serpents’ Island had no effect in the delimitation of the case, but also found it inappropriate to select a baseline on Serpents’ Island and adjust the provisional equidistance line according to the geographical settings. This case may constitute an example on the dispute concerning the maritime delimitation between Turkey and Greece in the Aegean Sea and Eastern Mediterranean. On this case, the court did not draw the endpoint of agreed maritime delimitation line since there has been no agreement between Turkey and Bulgaria as well as between Turkey and Ukraine. This tolerant area is critical for Turkey and the delimitation line should be determined to forestall potential disputes among Black Sea countries.
