This article will present a preliminary study, whose goal is to characterize how BSc students of engineering at an academic college of engineering, perceive teaching that has the potential to promote their understanding. The research participants comprised of 14 students who took part in a course called “Technique, mathematical understanding and what lies between them”, taken as part of a General Studies program. In the questionnaire given during the last lesson of the course, the students were asked to write a letter to their imaginary lecturer and offer five recommendations in relation to their teaching that, in the students’ opinion, may help increase students’ understanding of the material taught. The students’ recommendations presented in this article address three main themes: content (or: the subject taught), relating to students and the teaching process.
