Social entrepreneurship is increasingly a buzzword in media, academic and policy circles. However, there is little consensus on what this term means. This paper takes an anthropological approach to explore the ideas and practices of social entrepreneurship. Using theories from development and globalization, and drawing on a range of scholars from Foucault to Bourdieu, this paper provides an anthropological overview of social entrepreneurship focusing on processes of self-making, community building and ethics. Using the established framework, this paper examines some recent trends from India.
