Technology has been having a major impact in every aspect of living and this is changing our young generation. In today’s classroom, the lecturers who have been schooled in imparting knowledge, can they teach these students? Research has been focused on this question and has resulted in innovative teaching techniques. One such technique is incorporating technology in teaching in an attempt to teach students outside the classroom. An implementation of this technique is using social media to reach out and relate to the students. Based on experiences gained from using social media for the teaching of Mathematics at the University of Trinidad and Tobago, this paper highlights several important factors that should be considered when using social media in tertiary-level education scenarios. These factors include the need to maintain the anonymity of students, the amount of extra time that students must spend outside the classroom to use the social media, and the degree of structure that is required in the social media interactions.
