In many universities in Malaysia, the English language courses that undergraduates enroll in place a great emphasis on grammar and the four language skills of listening, speaking, reading and writing. English literary texts are seldom used extensively in the language classroom to provide learners with the opportunity to read, think, reflect and appreciate the language. Hence, literary literacy, an important component of critical literacy, does not play a prominent role in the English language classroom. Barton (2009) contends that literacy involves not just reading and writing but also encompasses the social, contextual and cultural notions.
