The aim of this paper is to present a project of key importance for foreign languages learning. The project under discussion – INTERMAR – has a specific domain and this is why it brings together maritime and naval higher educational institutions from Europe having as first aim the ambition to demonstrate that foreign languages, especially those belonging to the same linguistic family, can be understood to a certain extent even though the respective languages have never been studied in a formal learning context in school or in any language courses. The importance of foreign languages was demonstrated long ago and it continues to represent an important objective, as it is stipulated in the European Union official documents. Multilingualism has become of great importance and the conclusion is that the ability to speak only one’s mother tongue is not enough anymore. One of the European Union’s objectives in terms of shaping the multilingualism policy for the future is to start the process of learning and teaching at least two foreign languages from an early age. INTERMAR takes into consideration the adult population in need of understanding several languages at the same time mainly because they work in a multilingual and multicultural environment. INTERMAR will be presented in terms of: activities, results, and partners. The activities will be analyzed up to the present moment since the project is supposed to be completed by the end of 2013.
