Various types of supplementary materials including skill development and practice materials, collections of communicative activities and authentic sources, as additions to course books, have always been significant in the process of teaching the English language.
The paper deals with the objectives of applying the additional educational sources to distinguish coherence – the connection of the students’ background knowledge with the appropriate material of a course book –for developing learners’ receptive, in this case, reading skills.
The paper also reveals the results of the experiment conducted with ESP students: In the selection of the supplementary materials the priority is given to the students’ choice thus enhancing their independence and encouraging their motivation.
