Social networking is an act of interaction and connection between people in a social online environment via the use of website. As a popular information and communication technology tool, social networking fosters relationship and building of communities of people, who share ideas and familiarize with happenings in the world. Most social networking sites are web-based and provide verities of ways for users to interact through email and chatting. It has provided new ways of communication and information sharing that has been regularly used by millions of people around the world. Most students don’t use social networking via internet for academic purposes; but for anti-social activities such as racketing, on yahoo messengers, Nimbus, MySpace, mocospace, Eskimi and so on. This paper seeks to re-orientate students about the academic potentials of social sites used in social networking, using a population sample of 200 students, a questionnaire called Social Networking Questionnaire for Learning Effectiveness (SONQLE) was constructed from the generated hypotheses, using variables like discovery, innovative and collaborating learning. Chi-square statistical tool analysis was utilized; data collected establish that Social Networking site apart from chatting, has positive academic pedagogical values. The paper recommends that, lecturers and students should avail themselves of the academics benefits of Social Networking as a supplement to classroom activities for effective teaching and learning.
