Feminist critics have discussed so many issues on the female gender. They contend that the woman occupies a more vital position than her male counterpart in the home due to the crucial roles she plays in the lives of the children and the entire family. It is assumed that the woman is both a helper to her husband, the children custodian, a guardian angel and a mother of all in the home. It is however saddening to note that an average woman hardly has the opportunity to enjoy the pride of being a mother because of the harsh treatment she suffers from the male counterpart. Makinde (2004: 166) attests that in most Yoruba culture, a wife is referred to as ‘eru’ (a slave) which connotes subordination of women to men. This presupposes that a wife is a property to be possesed and used at the owner’s whims. Meanwhile, the significance of the women’s roles in the society cannot be slighted especially in relation to the sustenance of the family’s social, moral, economic, mental and emotional development that consummates in the total development of the child. From this standpoint, it is plausible to assume that the success and total development of the nation depend on women as models who are to train up the child from infancy stage. This study therefore examines the appraisal of women in the work of OlatubosunOladapo ‘a poet’ who eulogises women in his poem titled “IYA KUUSE” in his book Orin Odidere 1. Feminist theory is adopted for this study as it is based on liberation of the woman folk in African culture. The paper thus explores the position of the woman as a mother in ultimate national development as depicted in OlatubosunOladapo’s poems.
