Shyness among children and adolescents either at homes or in schools is a very old phenomenon. Up till this moment however, this behavioural problem has received little or no attention from researchers, perhaps because of the prevailing belief or notion that children ought to be shy in certain situations. As a result the researchers in this paper take a look at the conceptual clarifications of this concept as it relates to the Nigerian environment. It also examines its causes in schools as it affects social behaviour and academic achievement of adolescents in secondary schools. Considering the negative impact shyness inflicts on the social behaviour and academic achievement of adolescents in secondary schools, the paper put forward some strategies and techniques for ameliorating shyness among children and adolescents both at homes and at schools. It also considers counselling among other techniques as effective panacea for remediating the social malaise (shyness).
