Reactive extraction is an emerging separation technique for recovery of carboxylic acids from dilute streams, providing numerous advantages like high selectivity and recovery. Kinetics of the reactive extraction is important in view of designing the process. In the present study, kinetics of reactive extraction of the acrylic acid using a quaternary amine, Aliquat 336 diluted in methyl-isobutyl ketone (MIBK) was studied. Effect of concentrations of solute and solvent was presented to determine the rate equation. To study the effect of hydrodynamics, effect of speed of stirring and volume phase ratio was presented. Method of discerning mechanism was employed to find the reaction regime. Rate constant was evaluated to be 0.0081 m3 kmol s-1.
