Understanding what students think about mathematics and mathematicians and being able to change students’ views may facilitate students’ mathematics acquiring process and broaden students’ view about a mathematician as a future occupation. The study aims to explore Latvian 9th grade students’ views on mathematics and mathematicians relying on the qualitative data gathered during the interviews. The analysis of students’ answers (N=5) shows that students view mathematics mainly as school subject where success is depending not only on mathematics teachers but also on students themselves. Students’ views about a good mathematics lesson differ but there are some common trends: students want to be active participants in the lesson and they prefer practical activities. Mathematicians according to students’ views are serious people with high cognitive abilities. Students often associate mathematicians with mathematics teachers. The studies of students’ views on mathematics and mathematicians are valuable as through them we can get deeper insight in mathematics teaching/learning process and find the ways to improve it.
